This American tradition started in 1621 before the United States of America was established. It was a huge celebration for a hard-earned辛苦挣得的 harvest the first year after arriving in the New World.
On September 6， 1620， the Mayflower ship set sail from Plymouth普利茅斯， Devon德文郡， England， taking all the English Pilgrims（清教徒）to the New World. The English Pilgrims numbered about a hundred people， and left England to escape religious persecution.

The Pilgrims sailed sixty-six days， arrived in the New World in November of the same year. They first settled in a cornfield abandoned by Native Indians and named it Plymouth Plantation（种植园）.
They worked on the land with much difficulty and were beset困扰 by a devastating plague鼠疫 in which half of the Pilgrim died in the long winter of 1620. In the spring of 1621， an Indian brave named Squanto and her Wampanoag（瓦帕浓人，北美印第安人阿尔琴族一部落）tribe came to their help. The tribe taught the Pilgrims how to work the earth and plant corn， beans， pumpkins， squash and other crops

In late September 1621， the Pilgrims were pleased with their great harvest. To celebrate their first harvest， the Pilgrims wanted to thank God and the Native Indian. They invited Squanto and the entire Wampanoag tribe that celebrate together in a shared feast.
It was said about ninety Wampanoag turned up， The chief of the tribe had his men hunt five deer to bring to the feast. The first Thanksgiving dinner had an elaborate menu with venison鹿肉， wild turkey， goose， duck， crane鹳， swan， and other waterfowl水禽; they also has local seafood: clams蛤蜊， lobsters龙虾， mussels河蚌， salmon鲑鱼， cod鳕鱼， bass鲈鱼， herring鲱， shad美洲西鲱， bluefish竹夹鱼， lots of eel 鳗鱼and oysters牡蛎. They also cooked plenty of vegetables， among them squash， pumpkins and beans were the most popular.
The pumpkin pudding was later developed into the traditional pumpkin pie. The first Thanksgiving dinner is said to have lasted three days with much food， beer and liquor. The Pilgrims and the Native Indian sat together on the ground， shared food with fingers or used rough plates made of wood or stale bread. They ran races， played old English games and staged parades during the festive， with marches， drums and firing of their muskets.

The first National Thanksgiving was declared by the Continental Congress大陆会议in 1777. On October 3， 1789， President George Washington declared that the people of the United States should observe “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer” on Thursday， 26 November. In 1863， President Lincoln proclaimed that November 26， would be a national Thanksgiving Day， to be observed every year on the fourth Thursday of November. In 1941， a Congressional Joint Resolution美国国会两院的共同决议 set the fourth Thursday of November as a national holiday for Thanksgiving.

五月花”号是英国3桅盖伦船，长19.50米， 宽7.95米， 吃水3.35米，排水量180吨，于1615年下水。1620年9月6日，该船载有包括男、女及儿童在内的102名清教徒由英国普利茅斯出发，在北美建立了第一块殖民地。随着美国的独立，该船就此名闻遐迩。1957年在英国德文郡（Devon）布里克瑟姆（Brixham）建造了“五月花”号，作为送给美国的纪念礼品。1995年美国普利茅斯城决定复原“五月花”号作为一艘展览船，作为普利茅斯移民社会发展的标志。

五月花号（Mayflower）并非第一艘从英国移民驶往北美的第一艘船只，但却是英国移民驶往北美的一艘最为著名的船只。五月花号载重约180吨，长27米。以运载一批分离派清教徒到北美建立普利茅斯殖民地和在该船上制定《五月花号公约》而闻名。分离派是英国清教中最激进的一派，由于受英国国教的残酷迫害，1608年8月离开英国到荷兰。其中一部分教徒决定迁居北美，并与弗吉尼亚公司签订移民合同。1620年9月16日，在牧师布莱斯特率领下乘五月花号前往北美。全船乘客102名，其中，分离派教徒35名，余为工匠 、渔民、贫苦农民及14名契约奴。11月21日，到达科德角(今马萨诸塞州普罗文斯敦），于感恩节后第一天在普利茅斯地方上岸。在登陆前，即11月21日由分离派领袖在船舱内主持制定一个共同遵守的《五月花号公约》，有41名自由的成年男子在上面签字。其内容为：组织公民团体；拟定公正的法律、法令、规章和条例。此公约奠定了新英格兰诸州自治政府的基础。

公元1620年，一条本用来捕鱼的小船悄然离开了英国港口，驶向了大洋彼岸的新大 陆。事实上，当他们离开港口时，许多老水手都怀疑他们是否能顺利到达彼岸，因为这条船是条小船，此时又不是航海的好季节。但他们必须马上扬帆启程的原因是他们中间除了受宗教迫害的清教徒之外，还有着种种原因必须马上离开不列颠的人们，包括破产者、流浪者等因各种原因在旧世界的游戏规则中找不到自己定位或无法实现自己梦想的人。船出发了，一共102人，经过65天与风暴、饥饿、疾病、绝望的搏斗之后，他们终于看到了新大陆的海岸线，这时候，船反而停了下来，船上的成年男子在低声讨论着：我们将如何管理未来的新世界，依靠什么，领袖的权威?军队的威力还是国王的恩赐? 他们决定将这个问题弄清楚之后再上岸。讨论十分激烈，有权参加讨论的是船上41名成年男子，妇女们只有旁听的份，最后，他们决定共同签署一份公约，名为《五月花号公约》， 内容是：为了国王的荣耀，基督教的进步，我们这些在此签名的人扬帆出海，并即将在这块土地上开拓我们的家园。我们在上帝面前庄严签约，自愿结为一民众自治团体，为了使上述目的得以顺利进行、维持和发展，亦为将来能随时制定和实施有益于本殖民地的总体利益的一应公正法律、法规、条令、宪章和公职等，吾等全体保证遵守与服从。

感恩节火鸡购物更疯狂
感恩节到来，火鸡将成为美国人饭桌上的主角。据美国国家火鸡联合会估计，在感恩节和下个月的圣诞节期间，美国人将吃掉数千万只火鸡。在美国，火鸡越来越受欢迎，其消耗量远高于猪肉、牛肉、鸡肉和羊肉。说火鸡多变一点都不假，它能以各种姿态展现在柜台上，冻火鸡、熏火鸡、整火鸡……
感恩节庆祝活动
每逢感恩节这一天，美国举国上下热闹非常，人们按照习俗前往教堂做感恩祈祷，城乡市镇到处举行化装游行、戏剧表演和体育比赛等，学校和商店也都按规定放假休息。孩子们还模仿当年印第安人的模样穿上离奇古怪的服装，画上脸谱或戴上面具到街上唱歌、吹喇叭。散居在他乡外地的家人也会回家过节，一家人团团围坐在一起，大嚼美味火鸡。
同时，好客的美国人也忘不掉这一天邀请好友、单身汉或远离家乡的入共度佳节。从18世纪起，美国就开始出现一种给贫穷人家送一篮子食物的风俗。当时有一群年轻妇女想在一年中选一天专门做善事，认为选定感恩节是最恰当不过的。所以感恩节一到，她们就装上满满一篮食物亲自送到穷人家。这件事远近传闻，不久就有许多人学着她们的样子做起来。
11月24日，在美国首都华盛顿白宫玫瑰园，总统奥巴马（右）和女儿萨沙（中）、玛莉娅赦免一只叫“苹果”的火鸡。每年11月的第4个星期四是美国传统节日感恩节。按照习俗，美国总统每年都会在感恩节前一天在白宫赦免火鸡，使其免于成为感恩节大餐。美国总统特赦火鸡的传统始于杜鲁门总统时代。
