Animal Farm The author The background The characters The plots The Seven Commandments The author Geroge Orwell was a British author and journalist. His work is marked by keen(敏锐的)intelligence and wit(才智), a profound(渊博的) awareness of social injustice, an intense, revolutionary opposition to totalitarianism,(极权主义) a passion for clarity in language and brief in democratic socialism.(民主社会主义) The author Considered perhaps the twentieth century's best chronicler(年代记编者) of English culture, Orwell wrote fiction, polemical (有争辩的) journalism, literary criticism and poetry. He is best known for the dystopian(反乌托邦的) novel Nineteen Eighty-Four and the satirical(讽刺的) novel Animal Farm. The background The book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalin era in the Soviet Union. Animal Farm allegorizes(比喻) the rise to power of the dictator Joseph Stalin. In the novel, the overthrow(推翻) of the human oppressor(压迫者) Mr. Jones by a democratic coalition(联合) of animals quickly gives way to the consolidation(统一) of power among the pigs. Much like the Soviet intelligentsia(知识分子), the pigs establish themselves as the ruling class in the new society. The struggle between Leon Trotsky(托洛斯基,俄国革命领导者) and Stalin emerges in the rivalry(竞争) between the pigs Snowball and Napoleon. Although Orwell believed strongly in socialist ideals, he felt that the Soviet Union realized these ideals in a terribly perverse(固执错误的) form. The revolution begins when Mr.Jones becomes too drunk to feed the animals, and after a day and a half without food they finally revolt. Snowball and Napoleon emerge as the leader of Animal Farm. Animals become owner of the farm. They work hard and obey the Seven Commandments. The pigs soon show their own greed by keeping the entire apple crop and milk for themselves as reward for supervising the farm. Mr.Jones tries unsuccessfully to retake Animal Farm with some other farmers after their animals start acting badly as well. Snowball becomes hero. After a disbute over building a windmill, Napoleon has puppies took attack Snowball and chase him from the farm. Napoleon become leader and still building windmill. To build windmill, Napoleon sells hen's eggs, which casuses animals angry but failed because of nine dogs. The pigs soon being trading with humans, and sleeping in the house, and the animals farms rules mysteriously keep seeming to change. The windmill collapsed after a violent storm, Napoleon and Squealer convince the animals that Snowball is trying to sabotage their project and kill animals accusing of consorting with Snowball. Boxer was wounded on the battle with human. Napoleon sends Boxer to take to the veterinary(兽医) surgeon. But in reality, Napoleon has sold his most loyal and long-suffering worker for money to buy himself whisky. Years pass, and the pigs start to resemble humans. The Seven Commandments becomes a single phrase: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others". Napoleon holds a dinner party for the pigs and local farmers. He restores the name "The Manor Farm". As the animals look from pigs to humans, they realise they can no longer distinguish between the two. Seven Commandments The original commandments are: 1.Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. 2.Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. 3.No animal shall wear clothes. 4.No animal shall sleep in a bed. 5.No animal shall drink alcohol. 6.No animal shall kill any other animal. 7.All animals are equal. Seven Commandments The changed commandments are as follows, with the changes bolded: 1.No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets. 2.No animal shall drink alcohol to excess. 3.No animal shall kill any other animal without cause. Eventually, these are replaced with, "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others", and "Four legs good, two legs better!"hte红软基地
