The capital city, Wellington is the southernmost and windiest national capital in the world. British settlers arrived in the 1840s and 1850s, establishing towns and clearing land for farms. James Cook visited New Zealand in 1769 and claimed the land for the British. New Zealand today is a unique blend of South Pacific and European cultures with a national identity of its own.
